The Posey County chapter of the American Red
Cross held its annual meeting last week at
First United Methodist Church in Mount
Vernon.
The Red Cross celebrated a 125 years of
service to its communities this year.
The meeting opened with a welcome from Red
Cross Chair Kay Kilgore. She was followed by
the invocation by Rev. Russ Abel.
Interim Executive Director Jan King offered
introductions and presented the annual
activity summary.
She gave information about health and safety
services, Armed Forces Emergency Services,
the H.O.M. team, blood services, Keep Infant
Seated Safely, Kids in Safety Seats, Safe
Kids Posey County Coalition, Buckle Up/Be
Seated, the Permanent Fitting Station, and
Disaster Services.
The Posey County Chapter contributed over
$35,000 to Hurricane Katrina Relief through
the efforts of local churches, schools,
businesses, community organizations and
individuals.
The Red Cross also held its annual election
of directors.
Carrie Allison, Dr. John Emhuff and Linda
Kuhlenschmidt were nominated for a two-year
term ending Aug. 31, 2008.
Randy Alsop, Don Cline, Jackson Higgins,
Vivian Kirk, Christopher Stemple and Karen
Wilson were nominated for three-year terms,
ending Aug. 31, 2009.
Returning Board of Directors were Rev. Abel,
Martha Alldredge, Deann Brown, Phyllis
Johnson, Kay Kilgore, Vivian Kirk, Mary
Nation, Mary Beth Reese and Teresa Spivey.
Jack Higgins was elected to hold the office
of First Vice Chair, while Martha Alldredge
will serve as secretary.
The board also honored the memory of Connie
Gibbs by reading a poem and presenting her
husband with a plaque that had the poem and
her photo on it.
The Red Cross recognized Nick Bebout, Martha
Maddox and Michelle Seifert for their
service.
Don and Hope Horning for five years of
service to the American Red Cross.
Brenda Sollman was unable to attend, but
received a pin for 10 years of service.
Kilgore recognized King for her six years of
work and expressed her appreciation for
King’s assumption of the role of Interim
Executive Director.
Kilgore added that the Search Committee will
be advertising for applicants in the hiring
of a permanent executive director.
Just before closing the meeting, Ken Meyer
presented the Anton F. Boehm “Tony” Award
for Volunteer of the Year to Louise Hall.
The 85-year-old woman as volunteered over
270 hours at local blood drives.
“I can’t believe I got this award. I worked
to get people to donate their blood, but I
had to have two units of blood recently, and
I was more grateful to the Red Cross for
their work in getting people’s blood. I
should have been giving, not getting. But
I’m really honored,” said Hall. |
