Thanks to the Major Moves program introduced
by Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels, Posey
County will see major highway improvements
along a 13 mile stretch of Highway 66, from
Highway 69 to near the Posey/Vanderburgh
County line in 2007.
This 13.55 mile construction project will
entail milling off 1 ½ inches of pavement
and adding four to five inches of asphalt
ultimately elevating the roadway.
This project will also include adding a four
foot wide shoulder along the route similar
to the shoulder in place along the Highway
69 between Mount Vernon and New Harmony.
Other improvements will include improving
mailbox approaches for letter carriers and
newspaper carriers.
According to The Indiana Department of
Transportation, the start date has not been
determined at this time.
A project with an early estimate of a 5.5
million dollar price tag will improve safety
along the stretch for residents in the area.
In September 2005, Daniels introduced his
Major Moves jobs and transportation program.
For the first time in Indiana’s history, a
prioritized, ten-year highway plan that
could be funded and constructed was
presented.
Between 2006 and 2015, the state will invest
nearly $12 billion on new road construction,
preservation, resurfacing and other
projects.
New construction spending will quadruple,
from $213 million in 2005, to $874 million
in 2015.
The funds for the 10-year program come from
a variety of sources, including:
preservation gas tax funds ($5.3 billion);
new construction gas tax funds ($2.5
billion); and proceeds from leasing the
Indiana Toll Road ($3.8 billion - plus
approximately $900 million in interest). |
