Kunta Steward
pled not guilty to charges related to the
shooting death of Luke Darr when he appeared
in Posey County Circuit Court Monday
morning.
Steward, 28, of Mount Vernon, was arrested
by Posey County Law Enforcement officers
Sunday, for allegedly shooting Luke Darr in
the head with a revolver.
According the probable cause affidavit,
Dorian Givens called Posey County Dispatch
at 11:57 p.m. Saturday. He said that a man
had been shot in the head.
He gave Dispatch the address of the incident
at 6124 Gregory Lane, the Paul Carnahan
residence.
Mount Vernon Police Officer Thomas Rueger
was the first on the scene. Officers Tony
Stalllings and Jose Gomez followed and the
three officers secured the scene.
EMS personnel arrived and checked vital
signs. They decided not to render any
additional medical assistance.
Officer Rueger identified the victim as Luke
Darr.
Steward was taken into custody and
mirandized. He waived his rights.
He told officers that he had the gun when he
arrived at the residence. When he
entered
the home, the gun was in the waistband of
his pants.
The gun was pinching him. Then then pulled
the gun from his pants and fired the weapon.
The bullet struck Darr in the back of the
head.
Statements were taken from witnesses at the
Carnahan residence.
Indiana State Police Detective Alan Sherretz
was assigned the case. He said
that
when he entered the home, he observed Darr
sitting in an upholstered chair. He said
there was a rag behind his head that was
soaked in blood. An exit wound appeared to
be in the chin area.
ISP Crime Scene Technician Greg Oeth was
also called to the scene.
Officers then transported Steward to the
Posey County Jail.
An autopsy was performed on the 24-year-old
Darr by Mark DeVaughn, forensic pathologist.
He gave a preliminary finding of fatal
gunshot wound, transecting the spinal cord.
Steward is being charged with involuntary
manslaughter, a Class C felony; reckless
homicide, a Class C felony; and carrying a
handgun without a license, a Class A
Misdemeanor.
He appeared Monday morning before Judge
James Redwine for his arraignment.
Beth McFadin-Higgins was appointed his
counsel.
Steward pled not guilty to the charges. Bail
was set at $100,000 or $10,000 cash.
He remains in the Posey County Jail.
Steward’s next court date is Sept. 11, at
8:30 a.m. |
