Kunta Steward pled not guilty to charges related to the shooting death of Luke Darr when he appeared in Posey County Circuit Court Monday morning.
Steward, 28, of Mount Vernon, was arrested by Posey County Law Enforcement officers Sunday, for allegedly shooting Luke Darr in the head with a revolver.
According the probable cause affidavit, Dorian Givens called Posey County Dispatch at 11:57 p.m. Saturday. He said that a man had been shot in the head.
He gave Dispatch the address of the incident at 6124 Gregory Lane, the Paul Carnahan residence.
Mount Vernon Police Officer Thomas Rueger was the first on the scene. Officers Tony Stalllings and Jose Gomez followed and the three officers secured the scene.
EMS personnel arrived and checked vital signs. They decided not to render any additional medical assistance.
Officer Rueger identified the victim as Luke Darr.
Steward was taken into custody and mirandized. He waived his rights.
He told officers that he had the gun when he arrived at the residence. When he

entered the home, the gun was in the waistband of his pants.
The gun was pinching him. Then then pulled the gun from his pants and fired the weapon. The bullet struck Darr in the back of the head.
Statements were taken from witnesses at the Carnahan residence.
Indiana State Police Detective Alan Sherretz was assigned the case. He said

that when he entered the home, he observed Darr sitting in an upholstered chair. He said there was a rag behind his head that was soaked in blood. An exit wound appeared to be in the chin area.
ISP Crime Scene Technician Greg Oeth was also called to the scene.
Officers then transported Steward to the Posey County Jail.
An autopsy was performed on the 24-year-old Darr by Mark DeVaughn, forensic pathologist. He gave a preliminary finding of fatal gunshot wound, transecting the spinal cord.
Steward is being charged with involuntary manslaughter, a Class C felony; reckless homicide, a Class C felony; and carrying a handgun without a license, a Class A Misdemeanor.
He appeared Monday morning before Judge James Redwine for his arraignment.
Beth McFadin-Higgins was appointed his counsel.
Steward pled not guilty to the charges. Bail was set at $100,000 or $10,000 cash.
He remains in the Posey County Jail.
Steward’s next court date is Sept. 11, at 8:30 a.m.
