Thirty years ago, much to the dismay of her father Dr. Emmet Edwards, Dean of the USI College of Business, Cheryl Edwards Roos graduated from Tri-State Beauty College on July 8, 1982, after a year of training. Dr. Edwards grew to support his daughter’s career choice, for he saw her succeed at a profession she loves.
“I’m just very fortunate to do what I want to do and to do it every day,” Roos comments. “I don’t always want to get up and go to work, but I always love what I do. You can’t have a bad day when you’re having a good hair day.
To celebrate her good fortune, Roos invites the community to join her and her staff at Salon 425, located at 710 Main Street in Mount Vernon, on Saturday, July 21, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for her 30th anniversary party. Guests can expect drawings every hour for door prizes and giveaways. Giveaways include a Sunsations package donated by Robin Oeth, color treatment, nail products, curling irons and flat irons. Chef Chad will be on hand as will Keesha Allen, a certified fitness instructor and owner of Curves in Mount Vernon.
Loyal clients, some in the third and even fourth generation, also plan to attend. One long-time client, Tonya McDaniel, claimed Roos as her hairstylist during junior high. Since then, McDaniel’s mother Shirley Rose and grandmother Joyce Rose have become attached to Roos, and now McDaniel’s three children (21, 17 and 9) all go to Salon 425.
“Cheryl has a great service. She’s really, really great at what she does. It’s really a great atmosphere. Cheryl is really a great person,” McDaniel says.
Salon 425 maintains the staff to provide a full-service salon. The three hairstylists are Roos, Sydney Duckworth and Ellen Bean. Their services include shampoo, cut and style, color and hi-lites, permanents, and waxing. Nail tech Michelle Seifert does pedicures, manicures (with nail gel if preferred), and nail art. As an add-on service, hot paraffin and hot stone treatments for hands and feet are available. In addition, Salon 425 stocks a variety of professional products for hair and nails. Office receptionist Kevin Roach answers the phone at 812-838-1554 and schedules appointments although walk-ins are welcome.
Closed on Monday and Sunday, Salon 425 opens at 9 a.m. Tuesday through Saturday. The salon operates until 5 p.m. on Tuesday, noon on Wednesday and Saturday, and until 7 p.m. on Thursday and Friday.
The Saturday, July 21, anniversary party at Salon 425 is Roos’ way to thank the community for supporting her for 30 years.
“People can go anywhere to get their hair cut and colored. I really appreciate people who keep coming back to support my staff and me. That’s just huge in a small town where it’s so easy to run to Evansville,” Roos comments.
“A lot of people now are not just customers—they’re friends. I got a lot of support when my mother passed away. They sent so many things to the funeral. It made me realize just how many people do support me. I would like to say thank you.”
