“Awesome!” That was Brittlebank Pool manager Ruth Fulwider’s assessment of how the Barracudas performed at Saturday’s Illiana Conference swim meet at Carmi.
The Cudas took third in the meet with 303 points, coming in behind the host Bullfrogs (366 and one-half) and runner-up Olney (344), according to preliminary results.
Brittlebank took 40 swimmers to Carmi and brought back 11 high-point finishers, with Jordan Crabtree (13-14-year-old boys) and assistant coach Nick Loehr (open boys) tops in their age groups.
Alyana Courey (9-10 girls), Maiya Courey (11-12 girsls) and Jayce Hamilton (11-12 boys) were second in their groups, while Braden Bourne and Jake Duckworth tried for second among the 13-14 boys behind Crabtree.
Third in the high point standings went to Hannah West (six and under girls), Emily Hueftle (9-10 girsls), Jonathan Hueftle (11-12 boys) and Hannah Cross (13-14 girls).
The high point swimmers were among 28 Barracudas who also qualified for the Millstadt state swim meet this weekend in Belleville, IL. There will be 21 swimming in the meet from Brittlebank. In addition to 10 of the high point swimmers, that group includes Liz Saltzman, Kayden Hamilton, Jonathan Chaffin, Jaylana Chaffin, Olivia Benthall, Makenna Russell, Kati Russell, Christopher Newman, Travis Harris, Daniel Minton, Sage Irons and Hannah McCarty.
Seven other swimmers qualified for Millstadt, but will be unable to attend the meet. That group includes Duckworth, Todd Ghrist, Katie Culley, Olivia Culley, Zane Irons and Lera Wilson.
Fairfield was a distant fourth behind the Cudas, scoring 176 points, followed by McLeansboro (108), Wabash Valley (107 and one-half), Harrisburg (98) and the Evansville YMCA (nine). The conference meet was moved from McLeansboro to Carmi after problems with were found at the McLeansboro pool on Friday, while there were no relay races due to time constraints at the Eckerle Park facility.
The meet was cut back to 78 events, the second shortened meet of the week for Brittlebank.
A series of heat lightning strikes forced the barracuda and Carmi coaches to call Tuesday’s meet after nearly three-quarters of the competition was completed, with Brittlebank in fronts 285-66.
The meet was called after 62 events, with the 11-12 boys’ breaststroke the final raced of the evening. The 63rd event of the night, the 13-14 girls’ breaststroke, was about to begin when both sides came out of the water.
“The rule is that we’re supposed to wait for thunder unless we see lightning with about two strikes within 10 seconds,” Eaton explained. “Then we’re supposed to go ahead and call it.”
Up until then, Eaton and his staff saw some pretty decent improvements from a number of swimmers. “Everybody’s dropped at least a second,” he said. “We’ve had some kids drop at least six seconds in turn strokes, so we’ve been having a really good night tonight.”
Hannah McCarty dropped six seconds off her time in the breaststroke, while McKenna Russell took off two seconds in the butterfly, Eaton said.
