Several Posey County businesses, churches and individuals have pooled their resources to put on the second annual ‘Back to School Bash’ Thursday, August 9, 2-5:30 p.m., at Mount Vernon General Baptist Church, 1717 Main Street. Black Township Trustee Lindsay Suits, coordinator for the event, commends the community for sponsoring the giveaway of personal hygiene items and clothing for up to 400 Posey County students. Free haircuts will also be provided by Mount Vernon hairstylists from Salon 425, Shearz and Get Styled.
The event is open to all Posey County students, and no proof of income is required. Giveaways include shampoo, conditioner, hair brushes and combs, deodorant, toothbrushes and toothpaste, body wash, socks and underwear, and gym bags. In addition, St. Mary’s Mobile Clinic will provide sign-up information for free teeth cleanings. A drawing will be held for winners of family tennis shoe vouchers from Shoe Carnival.
Suits has expressed deep appreciation for community donations that make the event possible. Donors of items or time include community members Vicki Bethel and Keren Greene, the office of Mount Vernon Mayor John Tucker, the office of Posey County Assessor Nancy Hoehn, the Mount Vernon Sewer Department, Consolidated Grain and Barge (CGB), Mount Vernon General Baptist Church, St. John’s Episcopal Church, Agape Family Ministries, Schneider Funeral Home, Dr. JT Fullup DMD and Dr. David K. Uebelhack DDS of Southwind Dental Care, Salon 425, Shearz and Get Styled.
Additional donations may still be made by getting in touch with Lindsay Suits at the Black Township Trustee’s office: by phone at 838-3851 or by email at email@example.com.
A special invitation is extended to middle-class families to attend the ‘Back to School Bash.’ In fact, Suits says that it’s the community’s way to thank the middle-class for refusing to quit in a tough economy.
“The middle class is trying to work and live within their means,” Suits comments, “and it’s becoming more and more difficult.”
