A number of Mount Vernon Wildcat athletic teams worked in local businesses on Saturday, November 3, during the 2nd Annual Athlete Community Volunteer Day. The brainchild of MSD of Mount Vernon Supt. Tom Kopatich, this event receives full support from MSD of Mount Vernon Athletic Director Gary Redman.
In talking with Redman Saturday, he expressed pride in his athletes’ willingness to act on their gratitude for the support of the Mount Vernon community. He noted that around 30 football players drove their trucks loaded with equipment and trimmed shrubs and cleared the yard at the Mount Vernon Homeless Shelter. The team turned out in such force at 8 a.m. that they finished their work in less than two hours.
In addition, At the Cross Mission received help from the baseball and boys’ basketball teams with cleaning and stocking foods for the meal kitchen, while the wrestlers helped with cleaning and stocking items at McKim’s IGA. Out at Expressway Auto Mall, the softball team, girls’ golf team, and boys’ tennis team picked up trash around the grounds and put license plates on and placemats in vehicles.
A good team builder for the athletes, their community volunteer day shows, most of all, their good character and manners.
“We want our athletes to say thank you to the community and to give back a little bit,” Redman commented. He plans for his athletes to continue the tradition in the years to come.
