The girls basketball season is upon us once again. The Mount Vernon Lady Wildcat basketball team hosted the Bosse Bulldogs in Saturday night’s home opener. It was a physical game that was well attended by both schools. Both teams gave it all they had and in the end it was the Lady Wildcats that were victorious beating Bosse 51-38.
The Wildcats opened the game by quickly scoring and opening up a 3-0 lead. Bosse would answer with a three pointer of their own and tie the game at 3-3. And after Senior Jacey Ritzert and freshman Alexis Nall put Mount Vernon ahead 7-3, the Wildcats felt like they had the control of the game firmly in their hands.
But the first quarter would be marked by six Mount Vernon team fouls that allowed Bosse to stay close and make a run of their own. The first period ended with Mount Vernon holding to a two-point lead at 8-6. And though the Lady Cats had the lead, it was the Bulldogs who owned the momentum heading into the second period.
In the beginning of that second period Bosse took full advantage of the momentum they had built. Bosse went on a 7-2 run taking the lead midway through the second quarter at 13-10. That lead would not hold though as Mount Vernon answered with a 11-2 run of their own to end the half. Mount Vernon went into the half leading the game 21-15 and looked to grab the momentum back from the visiting Bulldogs.
That momentum remained on their side in the second half as the Lady Cats started the third period scoring the first 14 points and built a big lead at 35-15. And just when all in attendance believed the game was out of reach, Bosse began to chip away at the Mount Vernon lead, getting the Wildcats to turn the ball over in the third and fourth periods by effectively using the full court trap.
With 4:20 left in the game Bosse used those turnovers and their physical presence to get back into the game, trailing by just seven points. Those last four minutes of the game featured two teams battling and scrapping for the win, but it was Mount Vernon who pulled away and put the Bulldogs away 51-38.
Senior Jacey Ritzert led the Wildcats with 17 points in the game using her athleticism down low to cause havoc in the paint. Freshman Alexis Nall had 14 points while Ellen Foster had 11 for the Wildcats. This win puts the Lady Cats at 2-0 on the season.
On Friday the Wildcats visited Central High School and beat the Bears 49-21. Freshman Alexis Nall led all scorers in that game with 10 points. In Reserve action Saturday night, Mount Vernon beat Bosse 30-9 to get their second win of the season as well. The Reserves beat the Central Bears 23-9 in Friday nights Opener. Mount Vernon will host North Posey Friday night at Mount Vernon High School. The freshman will play at 5 p.m. followed by the Junior Varsity at 6 p.m. and varsity at 7:30.
