The process of building a basketball program is not always an easy task. Many things are needed in the process but some of the main ingredients necessary are consistency and stability. These are two things that Mount Vernon Wildcat coach Marc Hostetter is seeing and is trying to bring to the program in his second year as the Wildcat head basketball coach.
“We have a good group of players and a pretty good team this year,” Hostetter said. “We have six returning varsity players that had significant playing time last year and a great group of seniors.”
Hostetter believes that those returning players along with the six seniors on the roster provide stability to the program and he is already seeing the consistency that it brings.
“Where we are in the beginning of this year is far ahead of where we were this time last year,” Hostetter said.
Among those returning this year is last year’s leading scorer for the Wildcats, senior Brian Koch. Koch averaged about 14 points a game and looks to lead the Wildcats once again this year. The other seniors on the team this season that will be an important part of what happens this year for the Wildcats are Collin Varner, Drake McNamara, Jevin Redman, River Vanzant, and Brandon Roy.
The Wildcats had a record of 7-17 last season, and hope to do much better this season. But for Hostetter, the goal this season is not revolving around wins and losses, but on playing better basketball and putting together consistent quarters of good play. When this happens he believes the wins will fall into place and the Wildcats will have the chance to compete in the conference and the sectional.
This year’s Big Eight Conference looks to be wide open in many ways, leaving the door open to any team that plays hard and puts together four great quarters of basketball.
The Wildcats will open their season November 30 at home against cross county rival North Posey. The Wildcats have lost to the Vikings the last three seasons and hope that ends this year. In order to be competitive in the game the Wildcats will need to play good defense and have good consistent play, especially guard play.
Junior Wildcat Bryce Newman returns this season to the guard position and hopes to lead the team to reach their potential in the season opener and beyond. And playing to their potential is something this Wildcat team looks to do. With hard play every quarter mixed with good play, this Wildcat team believes it can become a team that makes some noise by the end of the season.
To quote coach Dale Norman from the movie Hoosiers, “If you put your effort and concentration into playing to your potential, to be the best that you can be, I don’t care what the scoreboard says at the end of the game, in my book we’re gonna be winners.”
