The Mount Vernon “female wetcats” have had a tremendous start to their season. Ranked fifth in the polls in the state, the Cats have opened in dominating fashion.
Last week the girls team hosted one of the largest girls invitational swim meets that Southern Indiana has seen with over 200 female swimmers participating. Mount Vernon not only won the 10 team meet, but won in dominating fashion, 164 points ahead of second-place Jeffersonville.
The meet was highlighted by a fantastic race in the 500 Free that was eventually won by Wildcat Freshman Drew Glover. Glover finished that race at 5:32.04, three seconds ahead of her personal lifetime best in that race. Mount Vernon sophomore Rachel Burke ended up third in that race as well.
Double individual event winners were Kelsey Turner, Clara Baggett and Drew Glover. Other top 12 finishers for the “female Wetcats” were Claudia Crawford, Rachel Burke, Samantha Gowdy, Taylor Culley, Samantha Reese, Kelsey Bruno, Taylor Cullman and Madison Denning.
Team scores for the Mount Vernon Invitational were as follows: 1, Mount Vernon High School, 387. 2,Jeffersonville High School, 223. 3,Jasper High School, 214. 4,Terre Haute North Vigo, 187. 5, Memorial High School, 147. 6, Reitz High School,84. 7,Heritage Hills High School,68. 8,Mater Dei High School,38. 9,Evansville Central,26. 10,Evansville Bosse,21.
This past weekend the girls’ team traveled to Terre Haute to compete in the Terre Haute North Invitational. The girls were victorious in their duel meet sweep of Lawrence North, Terre Haute North and Jeffersonville.
Clara Baggett and Claudia Crawford won two races while Taylor Cullman, Drew Glover, and Samantha Gowdy won one race each for the Wildcats.
The Wins for the Cats continue their great season. The swim teams will be back in action this Thursday at home.
