The Mount Vernon School Board looked to the future at its Monday, Nov. 19, meeting.
Members voted to grant permission to advertise for the purchase of two 66 passenger buses from the Bus Replacement Fund. Administrators added that two spare buses will be traded to complete the purchase.
Equally as important, members voted to approve the following persons to move on the salary schedule (in other words, to move up on the pay scale), as recommended by the Advanced Study Committee: bachelor’s degree plus 10 hours toward a master’s degree—Cynthia Basham, Dustin Boyer, Erica Thomas, Beth Walter, Sarah Wellmeier; bachelor’s degree plus 20 hours toward a master’s degree—Jennifer Dyhrkopp and Scott LaMar; master’s degree + 10 hours—Valerie Harmon and Jennifer Ploetz; and master’s degree plus 20 hours, Richard Jesch. It was noted that these teachers will see their salary increase within the next two pay periods.
MSD of Mount Vernon Supt. Tom Kopatich noted that Cynthia Basham, a high school Spanish teacher, will soon complete her master’s degree. Earning her master’s will allow MVHS to once again offer Spanish for dual college credit. Kopatich said that dual credit for Spanish might possibly be offered again in the 2013-14 school year, but more likely, it will be offered again in the 2014-15 school year.
In other business:
•The board accepted the resignation, effective October 30, 2012, from Elizabeth Castle, MVHS girls head soccer coach.
•The board authorized renewing current leases for specified sections of Hedges Central School with The Message Ministry and Willowtree for one year beginning Dec. 1, 2012. Supt. Kopatich noted that renters pay for utilities and custodial work at Hedges while the capital projects fund pays for a small amount of additional maintenance.
•The board and administration recognized, as Board President Heather Allyn said, “a long list of fabulous kids” in the MVHS Fine Arts Academy and in MVHS athletics.
The Mount Vernon School Board will meet again Monday, Dec. 3, 2012, 5:45 p.m., in the junior high media center.
