Make a String or Yarn Tree
Crafty elves make original gifts from ordinary things and we know their secret. This December 5 at 10 a.m. you will learn the secret behind creating a lovely string or yarn tree that you can give as a gift or keep to decorate your home. All your supplies will be provided. You must be 18 or older and register at the Adult Information Desk to take part in this program.
The library will be closing at 5:00 p.m. this Wednesday so that our staff may attend our Holiday Party.
Celebrate Christmas With Bells
Join us December 6 at 6 p.m. in a celebration of the holidays as the First United Methodist Church Bell Choir performs a selection of Christmas music with hand bells at the library. This program is suitable for all age groups and if being offered free to the public.
DIY Holiday Cards and Ornaments
Hey teens, show your friends and family how much you appreciate them by making your own holiday cards this December 10 at 3:30 p.m. Also, you can make your own ornaments. We will also have free food and a movie. This program is open to grades 6 to 12 only and you must register to attend.
Join us December 10 at 6 p.m. as Angelus, the six women ensemble from the Fine Arts Academy at Mount Vernon Senior High School, perform a selection of seasonal songs. This performance is suitable for the whole family.
Make a Teacup Candle
If you have an interest in candle craft this is a program you will want to make sure you attend. On December 11 at 10 a.m. you can learn how torecycle an old teacup into a lovely candle perfect for gift giving. Your supplies will be provided free of charge but you must register to participate.
Special Needs Storytime
Join us for reindeer games and fun on December 11 at 6 p.m. This event focuses on the needs of children on the autism spectrum. Children ages 3 and up and their caregivers are invited to engage in activities such as, active movement songs, action rhymes, interactive play, and creative crafts in an inviting environment. Registration required.
“Busy Hands” is a gathering of crafters who will be meeting at 10 a.m. on December 12. If you quilt, knit, do tatting, crochet, etc. come and join the fun! No registration is necessary but space is limited.
The Lego Club will be meeting on December 12 at 3:30 p.m. This is a monthly club for anyone age 6 and older who loves working with Legos. Each meeting we will be building things from Legos. Registration is required.
In order to expand our service to the community, the Alexandrian Public Library has a wall gallery for artists to display their work in our foyer. We are in search of local amateur and professional talent. You need not live in the Mount Vernon area to participate, display and promote your work. We are now accepting requests for this free gallery space for March and April of 2013. Reservations are also being accepted for the use of the library glass display case in our foyer for the coming year.
Treasures Gift Shop
Are you looking for a unique Christmas gift for your friends and family? Be sure to drop by the Treasures Gift Shop at the Alexandrian Public Library. We are delighted to offer you a new selection of quality local arts and crafts as well as other merchandise that would make a perfect Christmas gift.
The Alexandrian Public Library is a wireless “hotspot” in Mt. Vernon. High-speed access is available throughout the inside of the library, as well as the space outside of the library on the block bounded by 5th, 6th, College and Main streets. Individuals who need Internet access outside of normal library hours, such as businesspeople visiting the city’s industries, can sit in their cars in the parking lot and access high-speed Internet. Patrons are always invited to enjoy their lunch in the outside gazebo, and can now also surf the Internet on their laptops.
Alexandrian Public Library is open Monday – Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday-Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. For additional information about library services or to register for a library program call 838-3286 or you can visit our website at http://www.apl.lib.in.us .
