A North Posey High School teacher received special recognition last Monday as he was presented with a Peabody Energy Education Leaders Award. A special assembly was called for the award presentation and to Paul Rynkiewich’s surprise, he received the $1,000 award. Maureen Moore of Peabody Energy delivered the award.
“It was a great surprise, I had no idea I was getting it,” Rynkiewich said.
Rynkiewich is in his 30th year of teaching at North Posey. He teaches AP U.S. History, World History and Anthropology. He also coaches football and junior varsity girls basketball. He is frequently mentioned by students and peers as an outstanding teacher. He was instrumental in starting a Fellowship of Christian Athletes program at the school.
He was nominated for the honor by principal Dr. Scott Strieter. He explained that during meeting with student liaisons to discuss the pros and cons of various programs within the school, Rynkiewich’s name would always come up in the conversation.
“In the 10 years I’ve been here, he’s one of the best teachers that we have,” Strieter stated.
“Kids come and go, but he always comes up in the conversation as one of the best teachers,” he added. “I just thought he needed a little recognition.”
“It is quite an honor to receive this award. I am very humbled. We have an outstanding school and school district. We have outstanding faculty and there are many, many other teachers who are just as deserving of this award,” Rynkiewich said.
Peabody Energy selects one education leader in each region every week. Rynkiewich will now be entered with other winners to be chosen as the overall education leader in the region. The winner will be selected and named at a reception to be held in Evansville next August. The winner will receive $5,000.
