The Wrestling season is coming down the stretch run and the Mount Vernon team is competing at the highest level they have all season.
This week the team wrestled in three meets to finish off their regular season in hopes of doing well at the Big Eight Championships this coming Saturday in Washington. The Wildcats this week defeated the North Huskies 35-26 in the final home meet of the year, and ended their regular season schedule for the season later in the week with a few wins in the six team duels in Tell City.
Earlier in the year, at the Turkey Classic, the North Huskies defeated Mount Vernon by three points. This past Tuesday night the Wildcats had the opportunity to pay the Huskies back and did just that. Four Wildcat wrestlers were able to win by pin Tuesday night helping the Wildcats secure the win over North. In the 195 weight class Wildcat Kyle Lang got the meet off with a bang by pinning his Husky opponent.
Senior Julian Suar, Dane Wilson, and Adam Hoehn all pinned their opponents as well. Noah Keller pulled off a great victory for the Cats in the 113 class defeating his opponent on points 14-3. Payton Whoberry also beat his opponent by points, defeating his foe 8-0 in the 145 class. In the 160 class Michael Rynkiewich won by outlasting his North High School opponent 7-1. With these individual wins the team accumulated enough points to defeat North 35-26 and gained their 17th win of the season.
Tuesday night was Senior night as well for the Wildcats. The school honored its seniors Julian Suar, Michael Rynkiewich, and Josh Hester.
The Seniors will be missed and were thanked for all their contributions to the wrestling program and the school over the past four years.
After taking a loss Thursday to the defending Kentucky State Champion Union County wrestling team, the Wildcats traveled to Tell City to compete in the six team duels. Mount Vernon ended up going 2-3 on Saturday beating North Posey and Tell City, while losing to Castle, Reitz, and Central. Adam Hoehn and Michael Rynkiewich both went 4-1 in Tell City giving both of them great weeks as they head into the Big Eight meet.
The wrestling team now heads to Washington to compete in the Big Eight Championships this Saturday. And while the team is still battling injury and other issues, the Wildcats seem to be wrestling at a high level and are ready for post season play.
“This is a sport where you need to be ready every time you step on the mat,” Wildcat coach Tim Alcorn said. “We have several guys doing really well right now and other guys on the verge of being there. For some of our guys the Big Eight meet is their time to compete and do really well in the post season. We really are looking forward to seeing where we stack up.”
With the three wins this week the Wildcat team ends the season with 19 wins, two wins more than last season. And though 20 was the overall goal at the beginning of the season, coach Alcorn says the team should be proud. “We should be proud of the fact that we improved over last year,” Alcorn said. “This is a very young roster and the future looks really good for us.”
