The North Posey Vikings took their modest 8-13 record into the Huntingburg Sectional this week and with a break here or there, could easily have come away with the title in Coach Heath Howington’s first year at the helm.
However, the Vikings did make their coach proud and part of that pride came from an opening-round win over the South Spencer Rebels.
In one of the Vikings’ better-played games of the year, they were able to come away with a two-point win at South Spencer in Reo. But Howington and his team knew they would have to duplicate or improve on that effort to be able to move into the second round of the tournament.
So on Wednesday, the Vikings appeared to have brought their “A game” into Huntingburg as they pulled out a 53-49 win over the Rebels.
The game started fast as both teams shot the ball quickly and well on the way to a 35-point quarter which found the Rebels with the edge, 18-17 after one.
By half-time, the Vikings had turned that deficit into a 29-26 lead “seniors played like seniors” and helped the North Posey cause.
The third quarter started well for the Vikings as Wes Harness found Kyle Whitmore off an offensive rebound and the senior sharp-shooter nailed the 3-poointer. Then, Whitmore came up with another loose ball and pulled up for his second of back-to-back 3-pointers and the Vikings had pulled out to a 35-26 lead just 1:15 into the third period.
But following a time out, the Rebels would regroup and by the end of the quarter, had fought their way back to within four points at 40-36.
Ironically, the Rebels held their largest lead of the night at 15-11 and never they led after the Vikings caught them in the second period.
The Vikings never enjoyed a “comfortable” lead in the contest, however, as the Rebels continued to hang around. They pulled to within 45-43 on a 3-pointer by Cole Woodburn at the 4:58 mark.
They would pull back to within two with 1;56 remaining when Alec Werry picked up his fourth foul following a Viking turnover.
But a pair of free throws by Harness followed by another pair of free throws by Werry made a two-point shot as the buzzer ended meaningless for the Rebels.
