The Mount Vernon boys and girls swim teams gathered Wednesday night to celebrate their accomplishments and for coaches to hand out awards to individual members. The wet cats had a good year and accomplished much that should make the athletes, coaches, parents, and fans proud.
The boys team ended the season going 9-3 and were crowned Big Eight Conference champions. The team finished third in the sectional and sent two swimmers to the state championship meet in Indianapolis. On Wednesday the team was honored and thanked for all their hard work this season. One member of the team was honored with being named Academic All Conference. Senior Wade Mobley holds that honor and was also named to the Big Eight All Conference team as well. Other members of the Wildcat swim team that were named to the All Conference Team were Austin Colson, Travis Harris, Jacob Poole, Ethan Harms, and Sage Irons.
The girls team also has an incredible year. The team went undefeated at 11-0 on the season and were not only crowned Big Eight Conference champions but also won the Sectional title at Castle High School. The girls went on to finish ninth in the state championship swim meet in Indianapolis and saw one member of the team finish second in her event at state. That member, Clara Baggett, was named to the All State team as well.
The girls team has one member who was honored as an Academic All Conference member. That member is senior Kelsey Turner, who will swim next season at Western Kentucky University. Turner was also named to the Big Eight All Conference team along with fellow teammates Clara Baggett, Drew Glover, Taylor Cullman, and Samantha Gowdy.
The individual awards are always a great highlight at the sports banquets and this year was no exception. The swimmers that were given the Most Valuable award were Clara Baggett and Wade Mobley. The Most Improved swimmer awards were given to Rachel Burke and Kurt Kissinger. The Leadership awards were given to Kelsey Turner and Aaron Duckworth. The Mentor award, which is given based on the vote of the freshman and sophomore members of the team, were given to Taylor Cullman and Kevin Moore.
All in all the season was a great success for the Mount Vernon wet cats. Coach Larry Zoller thanked the seniors for all their hard work and dedication while also challenging the remaining swimmers to continue working hard to achieve all they can in this upcoming season. And if next season is anything like this season we are all in for a great treat.
