Families in the Mount Vernon School Corporation can plan Christmas and Spring Break vacations way in advance with the adoption of the 2013-2014 school calendar at the School Board meeting on Monday, March 18. Staff must report on Monday, August 12 and school bells will ring Tuesday August 13 for students. The first semester ends with a full two week Christmas Break from school dismissal on Friday, December 20 to January 6. Spring Break is slated for the last full week in March.
There are standard holidays and five snow days built in to the calendar with the projected end of the second semester set for Thursday, May 22 for students and May 23 for staff. This will total the required 180 days.
The Board also discussed a proposed 2015-16 school year calendar for action to be taken at an upcoming meeting. School Superintendent Tom Kopatich explained, “I know this is three years in advance and not set in stone, but I would like to see the starting date and Christmas and Spring Breaks Okayed so families can plan ahead”.
Dates were also announced for nine youth summer camps to be taught by staff members. These include baseball, football, soccer, volleyball skills, girls’ and boys’ basketball, tennis, wrestling and Lady Cats softball. Dates and fees vary, with several starting as early as May 28 and the latest are finished by June 28. Check the office or school websites for a complete list of dates, instructors and fees.
Kopatich stressed that cost should never be an issue if a student wants to participate and cannot afford it. “Please call the coaches and discuss it with them. We have money available for students in these cases”, he explained.
In other board business:
–The Indiana School Boards Association recognized Board Member Beth McFaddin Higgins in achieving the Master Level in their Certification/ Awards Program.
–The Board recognized Doctors Wagmeister and Kuhlenschmidt for offering MVHS Biology III students invaluable learning experiences through Deaconess Hospital.
Both make them as educational and rewarding as possible for each student. Biology Instructor Bernie Reidford was also cited for his work with the innovative class.
–The MVHS Dance Cats won first place in Hip Hop at the state dance team competition in Newcastle on March 15-16.
–Sherri A. Schroeder was hired as District-wide Information Systems Specialist replacing Jason E. Reeves. Keshia M. Seitz will replace Susanne G. Hayden as District-wide Technology Integration Specialist.
–Assistant Superintendent Loren Evans reported on the financial statement for February. As of the end of the month, 16.67 percent of the year has passed with only 14.5 percent of the General Fund expended. “We are 2.17 percent below expenditures which is outstanding” School Superintendent Tom Kopatich noted, “But we will catch up in March since we have three pay periods”.
– Multi-School Building orporation vouchers were discussed and approved for $9,215. 95
–The date for accepting sealed bids for resurfacing and repair of the MVHS track was extended from March 7 to March 28. All vendors were notified by TEC Consulting Engineers.
–listed the seven people who will serve on this year’s scholarship selection committee. It is a blend of staff and community members.
–approved travel opportunities for nine staff members.
–announced ISTEP went just fine. Kopatich said there was one virus at the junior high that needed to be worked out and all students are finished and accounted for now. In April all the testing will be done online and all results should be received by May 1. “Last year they turned scores around very quickly. We need to know by May 1 if summer remediation will be required for a student.” he said.
–approved reports and meeting dates. The next meeting is Monday, April 1 at 5:45 p,m. in the Mount Vernon Junior High School Library, June 4 from 8am to 5 pm was set as an all day board workshop.
