Although North Posey high School tennis coach Brandon Barrett lost his No. 1 singles player and his entire No. 1 doubles team to graduation last year, the future still appears bright for the Lady Vikings.
With the help of a summer tennis program and junior high programs, Barrett has the program headed in the right direction, as was evidenced by a split in the opening week of this year’s season.
The Lady Vikings took the one that matters, at least for the time being, over Southg Spencer. The team moved to 1-0 in the Pocket Athletic Conference with a 5-0 win over South Spencer to open the season. In that match, Barrett got consistent play from every position as none of the matches was pushed to three sets. Results from the reserve match were just as impressive and every bit as critical as the reserves also defeated their Lady Rebel counterparts by a score of 5-1.
Varsity results are as follows: NP 5 SS 0
At No. 1 singles, Shelby Ackerman defeated Bethany Damin 6-0, 6-1 while at No. 2 singles, Carol Santos def Crystal Bidwell 6-1, 6-2. At No. 3 singles, Jordan Butler def Lexis Harris 6-1, 6-1.
At. No. 1 doubles, Brianna Brown/Megan Durchholz defeated Haley Harrison/Beth Brown 6-0, 6-0, and at No. 2 doubles, Brianna Perry/Liz Watzlavik def Aleks Kuchenbrad/Brittney Wood 7-5, 6-1.
Later in the week, the Lady Vikings were defeated 3-2 by a possible sectional opponent in Mount Vernon.
Mount Vernon’s No. 1 singles player senior Claire Schroeder (MV), one of the better players in the area this year and a four-year letter-winner for the Wildcats defeated North Posey junior Shelby Ackerman 6-1, 6-3. At No. 2 singles, Sara O’Neil (MV) defeated Bri Brown 6-4, 6-0. At No. 3 singles, Carol Santos (NP) defeated Hayley Salaman 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (1).
In doubles action, the North Posey tandem of Brianna Perry/Megan Durchholz (NP) def Zoe Burkhart/Livia Hopper 2-6, 6-2, 7-5, while at No. 2 doubles, with the outcome of the match already decided, D Devon Allyn/Megan McCarty(MV) defeated Jordan Butler/Liz Watzlavik 0-0 retired
North Posey’s reserves held Mount Vernon without a score in those matches, winning 5-0.
The Vikings were scheduled to participate in the Gibson Southern Invitational on Saturday. Complete results of that tournament were not available at press time, although the number two doubles team of Jordan Butler and Liz Watzlavik tied for first and the team finished in a three-way tie for first place.
But after tie-breaker criteria was figured, the Vikings came in third.
“It went by sets won and NE Dubois/Gibson Southern had 14 each and we had 12,” Barrett explained. Then it broke down by games won and Gibson had 119 and Northeast Dubois had 102.”
Maddie Koester won the championship for the Numner 3 Singles position and Lizzie Watzlavik/Jordan Butler won at No. 2 Doubles. Megan Durchholz/Brianna Perry was runner-up at No. 1 Doubles.
The Vikings will host Pike Central on Wednesday and Reitz on Thursday.
