After dropping their second game of the season against Mater Dei the Mount Vernon Wildcat baseball team went looking for a little redemption Tuesday when they took on the Princeton Tigers at home. Princeton came into the game with a 4-6 and ended up giving the Wildcats all they could handle. The Cats battled back to find the redemption they were looking for though, beating the Tigers 9-5.
Princeton got on the board 1-0 in the third inning and put Mount Vernon even further behind in the fourth on a two run double. With the score 3-0 in favor of the Tigers Mount Vernon came to bat in the bottom of the fourth looking to get their bats going. That’s exactly what happened. Senior Jevin Redman’s bases clearing double tied the game at 3-3 and Trevor Veeck put the Wildcats ahead by driving a single into right field that scored Redman.
The Wildcats then began to pour on the runs. They added a run in the fifth inning when Wildcat Seth Reeves singled in River VanZant to put Mount Vernon ahead 5-3. It was more of the same in the sixth inning as well for the home team. Trevor Veeck opened the sixth with a triple and Drake McNamara’s single put the Cats up three on the scoreboard. McNamara would score in the inning on a Princeton wild pitch and Bryce Newman’s single scored two more Mount Vernon runs to place the Wildcats firmly ahead 9-3 going into the final inning of play.
Kris McKinney, who relieved starter Ross Canada, worked the final inning on the mound for Mount Vernon. Princeton scored two runs early in the seventh but the Wildcats were able to get the three outs needed to hang on to the win. Ross Canada got the win for the Wildcats as he struck out three batters in the game while only giving up three runs. McKinney ended up with the save.
And just as we thought the team had gotten on a roll the Wildcats ran into Evansville North High School on Thursday and ended up dropping the game in a close match up with the Huskies. Mount Vernon took an early lead in the game going up 1-0 in the second inning. North would respond to that by scoring once in the top of the third to tie the game at 1-1 and set up a great match up the rest of the way.
Mount Vernon would go up in the fourth inning 2-1 but it was the Huskies who responded by scoring five runs off of Mount Vernon relievers in the sixth and seventh innings to put the visitors up by four runs as the Cats went to the plate the final time in the bottom of the seventh inning. The wildcats would make a run and scored two more runs but it wouldn’t be enough and North walked away with a 6-4 win over the Cats.
The loss was the second loss of the week for Mount Vernon, something that has not happened all season long. The Cats have dropped two of their last three games but still sit well with an overall record of 12-3 on the season. There is still plenty of time for the team to recover from the rough week.
Mount Vernon will be back in action this week as they host the Castle Knights on Wednesday in what promises to be a great matchup. The boys then play Mount Carmel at home on Thursday to finish out their schedule for the week.
