North Posey used timely hitting, Thursday, to help hold off Boonville and claim a 7-3 victory in high school baseball. The senior night non-conference contest saw the Vikings score four runs in the third inning to break a 1-1 tie en-route to the win.
The hosts went up 1-0 in the first inning when junior outfielder Christian Jones reached base after being hit by a pitch, later scoring on a sacrifice fly by Colton Martin. After Boonville knotted the score with a tally in their half of the third the Vikings wasted no time in responding.
Jacob Bender laced a one out double to get things started in the third for North Posey. Alec Werry followed with a walk and two pitches later a Pioneer throwing error allowed the Vikings to tally the go-ahead run for a 2-1 lead. After Martin walked, and was forced at second base on a fielder’s choice, tallying Werry, sophomore infielder Derek Lindauer stroked his first home run of the season to put North Posey up 5-1.
Boonville scored a lone run in the top of the fifth on a lead-off double and two ground outs and added another run in their half of the sixth to cut the Viking advantage to 5-3. North Posey added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth when senior Nick Heldt reached base with two outs on a hit by pitch. Teammate Kyle Voegel followed by belting a two-run homer, his second hit of the game, to provide the final margin of victory.
“It was nice to see the players come up with the timely hits we needed to hold Boonville off,” commented North Posey coach Kevin Smith. “Timely and hits are words that have not gone together for us a lot this year, but we have been improving in this regard over the past month of the season. Boonville had a nice approach at the plate and they made us work for this win.”
Alec Werry picked up the victory on the mound for the Vikings by working 5 innings and scattering five Pioneer hits.
On Tuesday evening, North Posey traveled to Ferdinand for a Pocket Athletic Conference game with Forest Park. The game, originally scheduled to be played in Poseyville, was moved due to wet field conditions.
The Vikings used a solid pitching outing by senior Kyle Voegel to claim a 4-0 win over the Rangers. Voegel tossed a complete game, holding the hosts to only two hits in the contest.
“Kyle was outstanding for us on the mound,” noted Smith. “He pitched to contact and allowed his defense to help out behind him. The pace of the game was what we like to have in order to stay alert and focused.”
North Posey plated two runs in the top of the second inning on the strength of back-to-back doubles from Colton Martin and Nick Heldt. A ground-out by Tyler Stolz allowed Heldt to cross the plate for the 2-0 Viking lead.
Single runs in the third and fifth innings accounted for the final offensive production for North Posey. Voegel scored in the third frame after reaching with a base hit and coming around on a single by Werry. In the fifth, Voegel reached on a fielding error and tallied the final run of the game on Heldt’s base hit.
North Posey will be busy during the final week of the regular season as they play five games over a six-day period. After hosting Washington on Monday, the Vikings travel to Tecumseh Tuesday night, then head to Pike Central on Wednesday evening. Thursday North Posey returns home to face Princeton and close the year with a noon contest, at Viking Field, on Saturday against Linton.
