Kevin Krizan, Mount Vernon High School Business Teacher and sponsor of the DECA Marketing Club, spoke to the Mount Vernon School Board at its June 3 meeting about the club’s ‘most successful year ever.’ Eighty-seven DECA students took part in a district competition at Ivy Tech in 25 categories. Fifty-five of those qualified for the state competition in Indianapolis and the team placed sixth in the competition. Thirteen qualified for the National DECA competition in Anaheim, California this past April.
Over 17,000 students competed at the National level from the USA, Canada, Mexico and Germany. They took a 100 question multiple-choice test and had to role play a business situation not seen ahead of time. Three students won academic honors by finishing in the top 20. Wade Modley placed eighth and Julian Suar placed tenth in the national stock market contest.
Board Member Heather Allyn asked what DECA stood for and learned it is the Distributive Education Clubs of America. Mount Vernon School Superintendent Tom Kopatich praised the dedicated teacher saying “We are so pleased to have him and the endless opportunities he offers students and we are so proud of him.”
Parent Claudia Gondi was in the audience and lauded Krizan for the help he gave her daughter Nicole Hawley preparing her for successful interviews to get into the Kelly School of Business at Indiana University.
Later in the agenda, Gondi spoke to question why the Top Ten Students in Academics are recognized as a group at graduation without singling out those who made a 4.0 grade point average as the class valedictorians. “Since when do we not have a valedictorian?”she queried. “A valedictorian is valedictorian and two students out of the ten were 4.0. Why were they not honored?’ She said it was not a complaint, but a reasonable question as she was very pleased with the teachers and education Nicole received at MVHS.
Kopatich explained that Mount Vernon had valedictorians up until about 10-12 years ago before he took the job. With weighted grades, it was agreed then to honor the Top Ten to recognize more students.
In other board action:
–Resignations were accepted from Tammy Schneider as Department Chair for Social Studies at the junior high school and from Samantha Rausch as an elementary teacher.
–Permission was granted to members of the Mount Vernon FFA Chapter to attend a conference at Purdue University June 16-June 20.
–Adopted four proposed revisions to the Staff Technology Plan. It will be renamed a Responsible Technology Use Policy for staff and guests. The board modified number 13 to read “Users shall identify students by first name or initials when publishing student artwork, pictures or writing on district websites unless legal conditions exist that prohibit a student’s identification in any form”. Kopatich praised the board for adding the revision stating, “Policy changes are your voice, the most important role of a school board is to review policy.”
–The Board entered into an agreement with the Evansville Christian Life Center for the Truth Talk Program for the next school year. It is an interactive whole-person based health education program used in the past at no cost to the district. Board President Kathy Weinzapfel called it a great program that college students help with teaching.
–Approved Krista Cartwright, Amber Fifield, and Jim Hatfield to attend meetings this summer.
–Kopatich said RISE evaluations for teachers are all completed except for the portion on growth models using ISTEP Scores.
–A special all day board workshop will be held on June 4 to get the board all up to par on technology.
–The next board meeting will be June 17 at 5:45 p.m. in the Mount Vernon Junior High School.
