Another summer swim season has been put to bed this past week and the Brittlebank Barracudas have ended their year in pretty impressive fashion. The Barracudas traveled and took place in the Illiana Conference meet at the end of July and walked away in second place. Olney finished the day with a very impressive first place score of 578 easily winning the conference meet. Brittlebank came in second right behind Olney with a total score of 446 while Carmi placed third with 413 points.
Emily Hueftle got the Barracudas on the board early in the conference meet by winning her ten and under 25 meter freestyle race. Hueftle won in convincing fashion by winning the race with a time of 16.51, a full second ahead of the second place finisher. Hueftle would go on in the meet to win the ten and under 100 meter IM race by a three second margin and repeating her three second win in the 50 meter freestyle race. The three races won by Hueftle helped her gain High Point honors and qualified her for the All Star race as well.
Other High Point winners for the conference championships were Caitlin Austin, Maiya Courey, Logan Austin, Taylor Culley, Taylor Cullman, Aaron Duckworth, Jonathan Hueftle, and Todd Ghrist.
Ghrist was very impressive in the meet, winning his age group (13-14) 100 meter freestyle race easily. Ghrist finished with a time of 1:13.01, nine seconds ahead of second place before finishing his day with a second place finish in the 50 fly.
Maiya Courey continued to impress as she has done all season long, by beginning her day with a win in the 50 meter freestyle race for the eleven and twelve year old division. Courey finished second in the 100 meter IM before turning her sights to the 50 backstroke race. Courey won the 50 back by five full seconds giving her honors on the day as well.
Seven year old Logan Austin also impressed in the meet as well. Austin came in second place in a very close 100 IM race before redeeming himself in the 25 meter backstroke race. Austin won that race with a great time of 26.68, qualifying him for the All Star race and making all who have watched him grow this season very proud.
Other Brittlebank winners on the day were Taylor Cullman in the 100 freestyle race and 50 meter fly for 15-18 age group, Taylor Culley in the 15-18 age group 100 meter breastroke, and Caitlin Austin in the 13-14 age group 100 meter breast.
In the team relays the Barracuda girls did very well in the conference championships winning three races overall. The girls 11-12 year old 100 meter freestyle team of Alayna Courey, Makayla Austin, Olivia Benthall, and Maiya Courey won their race with an impressive time of 1:09.25.
The 13-14 year old 200 meter freestly relay race was also won by the Barracudas. The team of Jalayna Chaffin, Kati Russell, McKenna Russell, and Caitlin Austin won this race with a time of 2:30.54 to help Brittlebank gain the all important team points on the day.
The final relay race won by the Brittlebank girls was in the 15-18 year old 200 meter freestyle race. The team of Ashley Walls, Taylor Cullman, Taylor Culley, and Hannah Cross finished just ahead of the Olney team with a time of 2:10.21 to round out the day.
All together the conference championship meet was a great success for the Barracudas. Brittlebank was able to then send a total of 22 swimmers to the All Star meet. That is a very impressive thing for this swim team.
And with the swim season now in the books and school right around the corner, all who competed in the pool this summer should be very proud of everything they have accomplished. As always, Mount Vernon swimming continues to see great athletes in the pool.
