The North Posey Viking tennis team found themselves in second place again, following Monday’s sectional final at Princeton. Just like in this season’s Pocket Athletic Conference race, the Vikings could not get past the Gibson Southern Titans and settled for the runner-up spot.
But Viking Coach Brandon Barrett was proud of his team and the way they improved over last season and over this season as they dropped a 3-2 decision to the Titans in the final after falling 4-1 in the regular season.
Barrett did what he had to do to give the team a chance to win the sectional by moving No. 1 singles player Reed Gertiesen to No. 2 doubles. And while Gertiesen teamed with Chas Wilerman to go out with a win, the team could not find a weakness in the three singles spots in the Titan line-up and lost 3-2.
“That’s what I worried about going into the tournament,” Barrett said of the Titans. “They just had very strong singles players up and down the line-up.”
Super freshman Evan Krohn was able to overcome an opening set loss to Tecumseh and eventually help his team move into the finals, he just never really seemed to find a groove against the more experienced Titans.
“I think he used it all against Tecumseh,” Barrett said of Krohn’s tennis. “But we got only five games total against their three singles players.”
But Barrett was proud of how far his team came this season. They finished with an overall record of 12-5 and a second-place finish in the Pocket Athletic Conference.
“Last year we won only seven matches and this year we won 12,” Barrett said. “I think that says a whole lot about these guys and the effort they put in.”
But tennis is not over for the North Posey Vikings as the undefeated No. 1 doubles tandem of Drake Davenport and Griffin Motz advanced on into the Evansville doubles sectional and after defeating Harrison’s No. 1 doubles squad to earn a spot in the finals, the Vikings took care of Mater Dei in straight sets on Wednesday evening at North High School.
The pair will now travel to Bedford-North Lawrence where they will face Greensburg’s No. 1 doubles team that comes in at 18-5. That match has been set for 9 a.m. Eastern time. Should the Vikings win in the first round, they would have an opportunity to advance to state by winning in a 1 p.m. match-up, also on Saturday.
“Harrison was better than we thought they would be and this was not the Mater Dei No. 1 doubles team we faced in the regular season,” Barrett said.
The Wildcats paired their No. 1 and No.2 singles players in an effort to advance to the doubles sectional. Their doubles team won while the Wildcats were eliminated in the Mount Vernon sectional.
While the Mater Dei team got down early, they came back from a 4-1 first-set deficit to make the first set interesting and picked up their game even more in the second set, as the Viking duo did not appear to have an answer for the “moon ball” lobbing tactics employed by Mater Dei.
But in the end, the Vikings made fewer mistakes in the tie-breaker to earn a spot in the regional.
The host Mount Vernon Wildcats, after losing to North Posey in the regular season, were able to take their sectional crown and fell to Castle in the Evansville Regional. Second-ranked Memorial won the regional without dropping a set to either Gibson Southern or Castle.
Next season will see a new team of Vikings as six seniors will graduate off this year’s team.
