Last month, the Posey County Co-op hosted a fundraiser for Caleb Fischer that exceeded all expectations.

Overall, $12,500 was raised for Caleb. A $50 gift card was also donated by Wal-Mart, which was sent to the family as well.

Over 2,200 meals were served. Their original goal was 1,000 pork chop sandwiches. They eventually sold out of the dinners before selling out of the sandwiches all together.

When word began to get around, organizers had to buy an additional 100 pounds of meat.

Many local residents and businesses gave donations by offering products or money to buy needed items.

Many local people worked to put this event together.

The group wanted a take a minute to thank a few of the people and businesses for their donations, including Arby’s, CVS (Mount Vernon and Evansville), Dairy Queen, Domino’s Pizza, McKim’s IGA, Mount Vernon General Baptist Church, Pamida, Cargill Ag Horizons, Platolene, Posey County Co-op, Posey County Council on Aging, Wal-Mart and Wesselman’s.

They also thanked people who assisted in the smoking of the pork chops and donating the use of their smokers, including Jeff and Sabrina Shellhorn, Darin and Lisa Seitz, Ritch and Lisa Dixon, Benny, Mark and Kurt Hoehn, Tim McGennis and Shawn Nix.

Caleb is the 2-year-old son of Tracy and Andy Fischer, and the grandson of Roy and Sue May and George and Ann Fischer, all of Mount Vernon.

Caleb began experiencing intestinal problems over the Thanksgiving holiday.

He has been in the hospital in Hershey, Pa., since that time.

At this time, Caleb is on the list for an intestinal transplant, but the family is investigating all other options as well.

They are reviewing all the options because of the uncertainty of the transplant.

Caleb’s family also keeps local people informed of his situation through a web page called www.carepage.com.
