The
three Posey County girls’ basketball teams
know they each have rough roads ahead, but
they also know one other thing as Sectional
play begins tonight.
They‘re all on a relatively level playing
field.
Mount Vernon will be the first county school
to see action, as the Lady Wildcats travel
to Bosse for a Class 3A battle with Heritage
Hills. The Lady Cats and Lady Patriots
square off at approximately 7:30 p.m.,
following the opener between Mater Dei and
Boonville.
North Posey gets into the act Wednesday, as
the Lady Vikings make another long trek,
this time to Forest Park, for a Class 2A
contest against the host Lady Rangers, and
New Harmony opens its Sectional Friday night
against Cannelton in the 1A tourney at Wood
Memorial.
New
Harmony coach Larry Kahle is ready for the
postseason to start.
"When you go into Sectionals, the whole
season starts over," Kahle said. "You’ve got
a brand new season starting over.
Cannelton’s 0-0, we’re 0-0, Wood Memorial
and Tecumseh are 0-0."
Kahle thinks that the Lady Rappites have a
good chance against Cannelton, if they can
continue to keep their heads up, and if they
play hard, they have a good chance of
winning the opener.
"The team has to be aware of the Lady
Bulldogs on the court, and they have to be
patient with the ball and hit some open
shots," Kahle said.
The
Lady Rappites are in a four-team Sectional
at Wood Memorial with the host Lady Trojans
facing Tecumseh in the other bracket.
The
Lady Vikings will have to work on its free
throw shooting, ball-handling and rebounding
against a taller Forest Park team in a very
difficult Sectional, according to coach
Charles Mair.
"In
the Sectional that we’re in, you cannot have
a good draw," Mair said "Because there are
too many good teams in there. You can’t have
a good draw in that Sectional."
Even with that, Mair wasn’t too happy about
having to draw the Lady Rangers, while no
North Posey team has ever played a home
Sectional game.
How
tough is the Forest Park Sectional?
So
tough a state-ranked team will check out in
tonight’s opener, which pits Crawford County
against Southridge.
"This is the toughest Class 2A Sectional in
the state of Indiana," Mair said. "There is
going to be one extremely good team that is
going to get beat and go home the first
night."
Perry Central awaits the Crawford
County-Southridge winner, while the North
Posey-Forest Park winner takes on the winner
of Wednesday’s first game between Tell City
and South Spencer.
At
Bosse, Mount Vernon will face a Lady
Patriots team that got away from them
earlier in the season.
The
Lady Wildcat coaches are hoping that this
team has improved to where they can overcome
Heritage Hills and that the team will be
ready.
The
Mount Vernon-Heritage Hills winner will take
on either Mater Dei or Boonville in Friday’s
semifinals while Memorial and Bosse will
square off in the bye game Friday.
Champions in all three Sectionals will be
crowned on Saturday, February 10.
